RoyOMartin foresters currently manage nearly 550,000 acres of highly productive timberland in Louisiana and Texas. Owned by another subsidiary of Martin Sustainable Resources L.L.C. (Martin Timberlands L.L.C.), the timberland consists of natural bottomland hardwood; natural upland mixed pine/hardwood forests; and acres set aside in streamside management zones, habitat retention zones, or high conservation value forests. Remaining acreage is under high-yield plantation management.
Nearly 25% of the raw materials consumed in RoyOMartin’s Louisiana manufacturing plants are produced from these lands. High-quality pine logs are used for plywood production at our Chopin plywood plant, and pine pulpwood is converted to OSB at our plant in Oakdale.
RoyOMartin’s management of this timberland asset has been Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified since 2002. This certification verifies that our timberland-management practices are consistent with the tenets of FSC® in regard to social, environmental, ecological, and economic responsibilities. An annual audit is conducted by representatives of NEPCon to FSC® standards to ensure ongoing compliance. As evidenced by our certification, these forests are managed in a responsible and environmentally sensitive manner. Practicing sustainable forestry is important to all of us because this helps to ensure that we will be able to provide the products needed by our communities for years to come. RoyOMartin foresters planted more than 3.7 million trees last planting season to regenerate 7,136 acres of new forests this year – an important step in our sustainable forest management. These timberlands are living proof that forests can be economically viable and sustainably managed and can provide wildlife habitat, clean water, and recreation opportunities for local communities for generations to come.
