What is Eclipse® OSB Radiant Barrier?
Eclipse® OSB Radiant Barrier is a high-performance, structural roof sheathing panel manufactured by RoyOMartin. Featuring a highly reflective aluminum foil laminate permanently bonded to one side, this engineered wood panel serves a dual purpose. It functions simultaneously as an APA-rated structural sheathing and an energy-efficient radiant barrier.
By consolidating structural support and thermal defense into a single product, it allows builders to provide structure and energy efficiency in a single step installation.
How does a radiant barrier work?
A radiant barrier reflects radiant heat back into the atmosphere rather than absorbing and passing that heat into the attic space. When installed with the foil side facing down toward the attic, Eclipse® creates a low-emittance surface adjacent to an air space that helps limit radiant heat transfer from the roof deck.
The low-emittance foil surface reduces radiant heat transfer from the roof deck into the attic, lowering attic temperatures, extending the life of attic appliances, and reducing cooling loads during peak cooling months.
Which side of Eclipse® faces down?
Eclipse® must be installed with the foil side facing down toward the attic interior. A radiant barrier requires an adjacent air space to perform as intended; for Eclipse®, maintain the minimum unobstructed air space specified in the installation instructions. If the foil is installed directly against another material without the required air space, its radiant-barrier benefit is ineffective. Proper orientation and installation are essential to achieving the intended performance.
What sizes and thicknesses does Eclipse® come in?
Eclipse® OSB Radiant Barrier is 48 inches wide (nominal) and available in 7/16, 15/32, 1/2, 19/32, and 23/32 performance categories, in multiple lengths. Additional sizes may be available; see current product specifications for details.
Is Eclipse® code compliant?
Yes. Eclipse® OSB Radiant Barrier is manufactured to DOC PS2 and PRP-108, meets RIMA-I US-003-50, carries CA Registration Number 1465, and is verified by APA – The Engineered Wood Association (mill number 511) and RIMA-I.
What is Eclipse® used for?
Eclipse® OSB Radiant Barrier combines structural roof sheathing and a radiant barrier in a single panel, helping builders provide structural support and energy efficiency in a single installation step. The reflective surface can reduce radiant heat transfer into the attic, helping lower attic temperatures and cooling loads in homes and light commercial buildings.
Does a radiant barrier help with energy codes?
Radiant barrier roof sheathing is a simple and cost-effective way for builders to hit strict energy performance rules in hot climates. Because building regulations vary, check your local building codes and look over the official Eclipse® architect and design specs to make sure you have all the right documentation for your project.
Is Eclipse® available FSC® certified?
Yes. Roy O. Martin products are available Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified, FSC® C022036. Qualifying FSC®-certified products can support applicable LEED® and NGBS project documentation requirements.
