As the wood manufacturing industry continues to grow and evolve, innovative solutions are leading the way with more affordable, stronger, and more environmentally friendly building materials. Cross laminated timber, or CLT, represents the latest of these innovations. CLT solid-engineered wood panels are transforming construction, offering the beauty of wood with durability and toughness that can stand the test of time. Learn more about the advantages of using cross laminated timber for your construction projects with RoyOMartin. And find out why many view cross laminated timber as a revolutionary alternative to commonly used building materials.

What is Cross Laminated Timber?

Similar to plywood, CLT is a lightweight yet incredibly sturdy building material strengthened with several layers of solid lumber. An adhesive is used to bond the layers together, typically in an odd number of layers but sometimes using an even number. The boards of CLT are kiln-dried and stacked in alternating directions, enhancing their ability to handle weight load and distribution on all sides. The laminations are thicker than plywood, and individual board height usually ranges between 5/8” to 2”. First introduced by Austrian-born researcher Gerhard Schickhofer in a Ph. D. thesis on CLT in 1994, this construction material grew in popularity in Europe over the following decades and is now becoming increasingly valued in the U.S.

Advantages of Cross Laminated Timber

The many great features of CLT make it an excellent choice for a variety of construction projects. Find out how the strength, versatility, and reduced environmental impact of CLT could improve the build of your next project.

Strength

Because CLT panels are arranged in an alternating wood-grain pattern, they provide improved stability that makes them an ideal pick for long-span applications. This arrangement allows CLT panels to support a higher vertical load capacity when used in walls. Additionally, they offer excellent thermal, seismic, fire, and acoustic performance, adding exceptional protection and dependability.

Versatility

CLT is also a versatile material that can be used in several applications, from walls to floors and roofing. It can be used in conjunction with other building materials such as steel and concrete to offer additional support. But, because it’s made of wood, it also looks great exposed in interior spaces. And it’s strong enough for use in several types of projects, from homes to multi-family and commercial construction.

Reduced Environmental Impact

Another advantage of CLT is its relatively low environmental impact. Wood is a sustainable resource, so CLT can be an excellent, environmentally friendly alternative to other commonly used building materials. And, because it’s easy to install, using cross laminated timber can also reduce waste as well.
